The masseter

Jaw width is a muscle.

The masseter is the thick muscle over your back teeth. It's appearance dictates how wide and defined your face is.

It trains like any other muscle. Six weeks of isometric jaw work raised bite force by 37%. Ordinary gum, six months, three times a day: no change in thickness. The load was too light.

That width is what people read as masculine. At real speed-dating events, men with wider faces were rated more dominant and more attractive for short-term dating.

Why Jaw Toner

Food and gum never load the masseter hard enough to grow it. Jaw Toner starts at 40 lb and climbs to 70. Ten minutes a day, rest days built in.

Pick your level

The research behind it

Wider faces got more second dates

Real speed-dating events: men with a higher facial width-to-height ratio were rated more dominant and more attractive for short-term dating.

Thicker masseter, wider jaw

Ultrasound + cephalometry on 80 men: the thicker the masseter, the greater the jaw (intergonial) width and cheekbone width on the same face.

It grows under load

Randomised trial: six weeks of chewing exercise raised masseter thickness and bite force over baseline, measured on ultrasound.

Correlational studies describe associations, not guarantees. We claim muscle adaptation, not bone change. Results vary with consistency and body fat.

Train it like everything else

Step 1

Choose your resistance

Start by picking your resistance level. Each level is printed on the front of the device.

Step 2

Rinse & thread the chain

Rinse it, then feed the chain through the middle of the device.

Step 3

Get comfortable

Chew down on the Jaw Toner for the first time. Place your teeth in between the groove and have a few bites.

Step 4

Bite vertical

For perfect form, wrap your lips around the Jaw Toner and bite straight down.

Step 5

Start training

3–10 sets of 5–30 reps, 1–2 min rest between. Work hard, but stop before any pain.

Deep diveMuscle and bone

Bone answers to the muscle on it.

Once you're past 18, your bones are set in stone, right? Wrong.

Wolff's Law is a principle in biology that says bone gets stronger and denser when more muscle is built on it. The more muscle, the more bone your body builds. Your jaw is no exception.

Your masseter is the main muscle that runs along your jawline. When you chew against resistance, it contracts and pulls directly on the jawbone. Bone isn't static, it's living tissue that constantly rebuilds itself based on the forces acting on it. So when your masseter is stronger, your body responds by adding more bone at those attachment points.

It's the same reason a tennis player's racket arm has thicker bones than their other arm. The muscle works harder, so the bone underneath gets denser. Train your jaw consistently, your masseter grows, it pulls harder on the bone, and the bone builds back thicker. That's how jaw exercise leads to a more defined jawline, not just bigger muscles, but denser bone underneath them.

What loading can and cannot do

Muscle grows in weeks. Bone remodels over months, and it responds most exactly where the muscle attaches. The Jaw Toner loads the masseter at 40 to 70 lb, every rep, on the bone that frames your jawline.

The research behind it

Muscle loads bone harder than gravity

The largest forces a bone ever meets come from muscle contraction, not bodyweight. Bone mass is regulated to keep strain inside a target band.

1,500 to 3,000 microstrain builds bone

Review of muscle-bone crosstalk in the chewing system: strain in that band drives bone modelling, while sustained strain under about 300 triggers resorption.

Bigger muscle, different mandible

Head CT on 382 adults: a larger masseter and temporalis cross-section went with a wider, more trapezoidal ramus and a more rectangular jaw body.

Muscle beat body-wide bone density

In dentate women, masseter thickness and the number of chewing teeth predicted mandibular bone mass and thickness. Whole-skeleton bone density did not.

Weaken the muscle, lose the bone

Twelve months after botulinum toxin weakened the masseter in 77 women, cortical bone density fell at the muscle attachment sites and the condyle.

Bone volume fell 35% without the pull

Four weeks after the chewing muscles were paralysed in adult rats, condylar bone volume dropped 35% and alveolar bone 20%.

Muscle-bone coupling is well established. The jaw-specific human evidence is correlational, plus animal and disuse studies, and one 12-month trial found no density change after masseter botulinum toxin. We claim muscle adaptation and loading, not a new skeleton.

Kiliaridis 1991

Potentially denser jawbone

Nasal breathing support

Mouth breathers show lower masseter activity. Oropharyngeal muscle training halved sleep-apnoea severity across 9 studies.

Spot-training is real for muscle

You can't target fat loss. You can target a muscle.

We make no claims about bone or facial structure outcomes. Muscles adapt to training; the rest varies by individual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it actually work?

The masseter is a muscle. Give it progressive resistance and it adapts like any other. We have thousands of customers to vouch for us. The studies in our numbers section are linked on every product page.

How long until I notice something?

Most people feel the workout on day one. Visible changes depend on consistency and body fat, usually weeks not days.
